It is easy to feel that in a world largely devoid of equal opportunities, devoting just one day of the year to supporting and celebrating women is not nearly enough. And you would be right to think that way. That’s why for the entire month of March, to celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th, we will be donating 5% of all online sales to The Fawcett Society and their efforts to raise awareness for gender equality and women’s rights.

Though the fight for equality has been going on for many generations, this year has had a huge impact on feminist progress. Recently the TUC has revealed that the Coronavirus Pandemic has had a significant effect on working mums’ (particularly BAME mother’s) wellbeing, income and job security with 9 in 10 mums saying their mental health has been negatively impacted experiencing levels of stress and anxiety. During lockdown, economists at Cambridge INET found a gap of 1.5 hours per day between the work done by women and men, an increase of half an hour. The Institute of Fiscal Studies also finds that for mothers in opposite-sex couple households, mothers are doing two hours less paid work and two hours more childcare than fathers. Mothers are also one-and-a-half times as likely to have lost work during the crisis than fathers.

As a female led company, with 78% of our workforce being women, the pain caused by the backwards steps resulting from Covid is felt personally by all who work at V. Anyone who knows me will know that I am constantly seeking to educate myself on issues of gender inequality, so that I can use my voice to contribute to the fight for a fairer society. So when thinking of how to make a difference this International Women’s Day I felt an instant connection to The Fawcett Society’s campaigns to smash stereotypes, fight for equal power and pay as well as their efforts to make women visible in the debates surrounding Coronavirus.

Now more than ever, it is important to continue to progress the fight for women’s rights. The Coronavirus Pandemic has worsened gender inequality but in doing so, there are now more eyes on the government to reform an unfair system of care. In celebration of International Women’s Day we hope our contribution to the Fawcett Society will go some way to helping their fight for the rights of women across the country. Because one day is nothing when we’re fighting for many lifetimes of change. #ChooseToChallenge #IWD #MakeWomenVisible
